Where are we? And what's next?

Building on extensive community input captured in a Values and Vision Statement, the Ka`u Community Profile, and Goals and Objectives adopted by the Steering Committee, the basic framework for the Ka`u CDP was developed during the November 16-21, 2009 planning "charrette" (or workshop).

The first draft of the CDP is under development.  It is taking longer than expected because of contractual matters, but the goal continues to be to produce an exemplary CDP that is consistent with all of the community input.  The first draft will likely be ready for review in 2012.

The November 2010 and June 2011 project updates as well as the presentations and minutes from recent Steering Committee meetings provide more detail about progress since the charrette.

Building on work already completed, the Planning Department is coordinating CDP writing and production.  To address remaining gaps in the CDP, remaining project funds (not additional funding) were used to engage a new set of consultants at the end of May 2011.

While drafting the CDP, the County and consultants meet with a range of stakeholders to gather additional information, discuss the pros and cons of different approaches, align complementary plans and strategies, and explore roles in implementation.  Information related to meetings about the HOVE readjustment concept are available here.

The next Steering Committee is scheduled for Tuesday, August 14, at 5:30pm at the Ocean View Community Association Center.

While the draft CDP is under development, Steering Committee members are also doing outreach in the community.

Once a draft CDP is ready for review, it will be available online and in hard copy at community centers and libraries.  There will also be public workshops to learn about the plan, public "speak outs" to provide feedback, and Steering Committee meetings to recommend next steps.

Opportunities for Steering Committee and public review of the first draft will be posted here, distributed via email announcements, and publicized in the Ka`u Calendar.
